Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JVC/Taiyo Yuden CDR, 80min, White Inkjet Print, 100pcsCustomer Review: Don't write more than 550mb and they are excellent. Otherwise, a 50 percent or greater failure rate. Summary: 2 Stars
Whether you buy Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or JVC Taiyo Yuden; it makes no difference. I am at my wits end attempting to find an inkjet CD that will write 650 mb of data. This is my third manufacturer after first trying Taiyo Yuden premium surface, then Verbatim, and now JVC Taiyo Yuden. Regardless, most will fail verification and sometimes copying at between 570 mb to 620 mb, with most failure between 575 mb to 585 mb.
For writing data to the CDs, I first used a Plextor DVD writer and Creator 10. However, because of the 50 percent failure rate I switch to a Mitsumi CD writer and Nero. That made very little difference. Decreasing the write speed to 24x reduced the failure rate.
I believe Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim stated they were manufactured in China and thes JVC Taioy Yuden claim to be manufactured in Japan. These do have a different inkjet surface. However, regardless of their claims, they are certainly made at the same factory.
If you let the light reflect off the writing surface you will see lines about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the outer edge in all three. From the center to about 1/2 inch from the outer edge, the surface will be uniform--no lines. Since writing is from center out, if you copy less than 550 mb you will not write one the lines near the outer edge and you will have extremely low failure rate. Until I can find an inkjet hub printable CD that can copy 650 MB, I have started using two CDs write my 650 mb and since doing that I have had no failures.

About Taiyo Yuden: Taiyo Yuden is the best combination of quality and price available in a blank disc today. The simple reason is there is no better combination of high quality and great price. Here's a few things you need to know about Taiyo product: Taiyo Yuden made the first CD-R disc. They worked with Sony & Phillips as one of Japan's largest chemical companies to make the dye which would store the data on the CD-R. Each disc is still made in Japan, in fact they are the only company in Japan that still makes CD-R, so if you see a "Made in Japan" on any CD-R disc, be it an Sony, Fuji or Imation, you know its made by Taiyo Yuden.
