These are full-sized over ear headphones and have large 50mm neodymium magnet drivers. They are not open but not completely closed either. I would call them semi-open. With the ring port anti-resonace structure they leak a little sound at med-high volume and you can still hear around you with them on. I would guess perhaps at most a 10db reduction. Not nearly as much reduction as Inner ear monitors with typically have 20db or more. The 11.5 foot cord exits the left cup with a thick insulated flexible material that doesn't tangle too easily which terminates to a gold 3.5mm stereo mini phono with a gold 1/4 inch push on adapter. The quality of the materials is top notch for the price and it feels a little heavy on your head with a 11.64 oz weight. The cups protrude quite a bit from your ears so you can't lay on your side with them on. They will get warm on your ears but never too hot or uncomfortable.
If you have large ears I recommend the foam insert trick(you just stuff a ring of foam under the inside of the pads to fluff them out). I didn't need it with my ears but it was fun to implement and increases sound stage without any large bass reduction.
The bass goes down to about 35hz at a good volume it will go to 8hz as specified but you would have to crank the volume too high. The bass is very flat and smooth up to the mids which are a bit recessed but can be brought out by taking some of the heavy ring felt that covers the drivers under the earpads. The earpads are removable with a soft and comfy pleather type material instead of the leather found on the rx900s(which also makes those cans a bit bass heavy). The nominal impedance is only 48 ohms so you really don't need a headphone amplifier and can play straight out of any portable player. The high frequencies are crisp and clear and my hearing only goes up to about 16-18khz so I can't tell you how high they really go. They are not tinny or sibilant at all compared to my cx300 iems which have great bass impact but not as controlled at much harsher and sibilant highs that I have to eq down to enjoy. The rx700 don't need too much eq and they sound great without eq if your source doesn't have one. Where the cx300s sounded like they were in your head with the sound in a narrow space, the rx700s have a full rich sound with a wider sound space. The clarity and detail will reveal the limitations of your source.
I highly recommend these headphones if high sound quality is your priority. They do not fold up or anything and they are impractical for portable use but very comfortable and conform to your head with easy adjustment of the full width headband. A final note I must add is that you really need to burn them in by playing something on them for a few days. This way you don't have to hear the sound of the new drivers loosen by the natural break in process.
