I purchased this for use on a long airline flight and on a cruise ship but I found it to be much more useful than that. I use it to reduce car noise when I take my dog for a walk and it is very useful for cutting the noise from lawn mowers and weed eaters. It is an excellent device for any of these tasks. Here are the particulars.
My main input device is an iPOD nano (second generation) and it now resides inside the headphone case along with the headphones all of the time when I am not using them unless it is being charged.
I found the sensitivity to excellent with plenty of headroom for my iPOD volume control. The unit also works without the canceling feature at slightly less volume. This is a key feature for me since I might be away from home when the battery runs out. My son has a much more expensive Bose system and it did not have this feature. There is an included 4' cord that plugs into the headphones and the iPOD. If it breaks you can easily replace it, unlike the fixed cord on my son's unit. There is always the tendency to compare units and I found the music (classical for me) to sound just as good on the JVC as on his Bose. If you turned the volume way up beyond comfortable mine did start to distort a bit while his was still ok but I would never listen that loud.
I found the headphones to be quite comfortable even over glasses but after several hours of constant use on a flight I did start to feel some comfort loss. Moving my earpieces on my glasses helped some and rearranging the headphone speakers on my ears helped also. Taking them off is not an option on a flight as they worked so well.
For walking the dog they really reduce the noise of passing cars. All you can hear is a bit of tire noise. Be sure to walk facing traffic as you will need to keep watch for the cars but the music is much more enjoyable. I also often listen to audio books and they were great as well. When you replace the one AAA battery (about 50 hours) be sure and get the cover back in place completely tight or you may experience wind noise in the speakers. There is also a slight thump when I walked caused by the vibration when I set my foot down on the pavement. It is only apparent when the music is really soft. However, if you jog the noise goes up considerably for me so I would not recommend them for jogging.
The unit can be used without the music and it will still reduce noise using the noise cancellation circuits and even with them off there will be a reduction based on the headphones totally covering your ear opening.
My wife complained when I insisted the case be on our carryons as it was hard to fit in but I am glad I insisted. Adapters for airline use and 1/4 phone plugs are included by the way. I would buy this same unit again if I were selecting a replacement.
Tip: I wrote this without reading the other reviews. When I read them I thought I might update mine. I think that some of the negative reviews were due to a bad battery. The one that comes with it may be old and not be in the best shape. If the volume isn't better with the noise-canceling turned on then the battery is bad. Similarly a good battery will improve the quality of the sound. If you are disappointed with the unit try a fresh good battery before writing it off.

The HA-NC250's noise cancellation circuitry includes feedback technology, which constant monitors extraneous background noise to eliminate up to 85 percent. For further isolation, JVC employs a double housing structure on each earpiece, providing an extra sound insulation layer. The headphones' foam-cushioned ear pads add one last layer, not to mention they're nice and comfortable for long listening sessions.
The headphones use a single 1.5-volt AAA battery for powering the noise cancellation circuitry, squeezing about 50 hours of use from a single battery.
